TOKYO – Toyota sold a record 9.98 million vehicles last year, it said Thursday, outpacing rivals General Motors and Volkswagen to maintain its title of world's biggest automaker.
The Japanese auto giant's highest-ever annual sales volume came thanks to a weaker yen as well as strong US and China sales, signalling it had recovered from a series of damaging safety recalls and Japan's 2011 quake-tsunami disaster.
The figures beat US-based GM, which said it sold 9.71 million cars last year, while Germany's Volkswagen logged annual sales of 9.5 million.
Toyota broke GM's decades-long reign as world's top automaker in 2008 but lost the crown three years later as the quake-tsunami hammered production and disrupted the supply chains of Japanese automakers.
However, in 2012 it once again overtook its Detroit rival, which sells the Chevrolet and luxury Cadillac brands. GM's strong results come after it emerged from bankruptcy and a government bailout during the 2008 global economic crisis.
Toyota, maker of the Camry sedan and Prius hybrid, also said Thursday it expects this year to become the first automaker to break the 10 million vehicle sales barrier.
That growth would be driven by overseas demand — Toyota expects volume at home to slip 5.0 percent this year as consumer demand takes a hit from an April sales tax hike.
Toyota has outmanoeuvred other automakers with a "comprehensive edge" in product lineup, sales network and cost structure, said SMBC Nikko Securities auto analyst Shotaro Noguchi.
"They have maintained that balance well, compared to its rivals," he said.
"Toyota should have reached the 10 million mark sooner if they had not faced major negative factors like the impact of the quake disaster and flooding in Thailand."
But he warned that the auto giant should not get complacent, adding: "If they only pay attention to production and sales figures, they could lose their competitive edge and wind up in trouble."
China, emerging markets driving sales
The sales figures cap off an impressive comeback for Toyota, which took a heavy blow from a series of mass recalls affecting millions of cars that damaged its once-stellar reputation for quality and safety and led to US congressional hearings in 2010.
The firm has said it expects a net profit of 1.67 trillion yen ($16.02 billion) in the fiscal year to March thanks to a sharply weaker yen and improving sales in North America.
Toyota has ramped up its drive to tap emerging markets while key US demand has also been on the upswing, helping the firm book ever-increasing profits with its half-year earnings surging 82.5 percent.
Japanese industry has benefited from the big-spending and easy-money policies of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with huge monetary easing measures from the premier's hand-picked team at the Bank of Japan helping push down the currency.
The weaker currency boosts Japanese manufacturers' bottom line by making them more competitive overseas and inflating repatriated overseas profits.
The latest sales also signal improving demand in China after Japanese automakers were hammered in 2012 by a damaging consumer boycott in the world's biggest vehicle market that was sparked by a territorial spat between Tokyo and Beijing.
Toyota has also announced plans to develop components for hybrid vehicles with two Chinese automakers, in an unprecedented technology-sharing deal aimed at increasing green car sales in the fast-growing market.
The move marked shift away from Japanese carmakers' traditional reluctance over such deals for fear of losing their competitive edge.
Previously, Toyota would make key components such as batteries and motors in high-cost Japan and then ship them to joint ventures overseas. But that drove up the price of models such as its Prius, which has seen sluggish sales in China.
China's pollution problem has stoked big demand for environmentally friendly cars, such as electric and fuel-cell vehicles, while officials have promised stricter emissions standards to deal with the mushrooming public-health issue.
Toyota's shares fell 1.32 percent to 6,256 yen in Tokyo before the sales figures were published.

Breaking: LASU students protest against poor facilities
Students of the Lagos State University, Ojo, on Thursday continued their protest at the Ojo campus of the institution.
Our correspondent learnt that the students were protesting against the poor facilities in the school, despite what the students described as the huge school fees collected from the students.
Most of who claimed to have paid about N250,000 as school fees. They kicked against the shut down of the school registration portal, which they said meant that some students, who could not complete their registration before the portal was shut down, would have an extra academic year.
It was gathered that before the 6-months ASUU strike which ended in December, the school's website had been closed down by the school authorities, preventing students from completing their registration. Now the strike is over, exams are starting and the portal is still closed. One of the students who claimed anonymity said, "Now that we have resumed, it is still the same thing. Exam is starting today and some students haven't yet registered. The Vice Chancellor said he is not going to open the portal which means all the students affected will have extra year after paying 250,000 as school fees. Most of the affected students paid N250,000 as school fees. Normally, the web portal is closed down a week before exam. The affected final year students will have to get an extra year. It won't cost the VC a dime to order the opening of the portal. That was the reason for yesterday's protest."
Unconfirmed report said scores of people had been wounded as some of the students attempted to take over the major roads around the university campus.

ASUP to discuss FG’s proposal
Nigeria's Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has expressed dissatisfaction with the Federal Government's proposal to the union.
ASUP President Chibuzor Asomugha told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the union would discuss it in two weeks' time at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.
Asomugha said that the union's position on the government's proposal would be known after its NEC meeting at a yet to be determined venue.
"We are not satisfied with what the government is proposing, in fact, we did not accept it at the meeting held with the minister on Tuesday in Abuja.
"Since that is what it can offer, we will convey it to our NEC, to decide the next action. We cannot say when we will suspend the strike until after the NEC meeting.
"I cannot say when, but as soon as the NEC meet, maybe in the next two weeks,'' the ASUP president said.
The Supervising Minister for Education, Mr Nyeson Wike, on Tuesday said the government had released N20.4 billion, to settle the Consolidated Tertiary Institution Salary Structure (CONTISS) arrears to the polytechnic teachers.
Wike released the figure at a meeting with ASUP and the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) in Abuja.
He said that the payment was delayed by the lack of agreement by both parties on the modalities for the payment.
According to him, the CONTISS salary structure being agitated for by the union has been approved and also included in the 2014 budget.
NAN reports that the polytechnic teachers embarked on indefinite strike in 2013 over the government's failure to implement agreements reached with the union.

Nigerian mob stones two homosexuals in court
A Nigerian court in the northern state of Bauchi adjourned abruptly hearing a case of sodomy on Wednesday after a mob hauled missiles at the suspects.
The stoning began after the presiding officer at the Bauchi Area Court 4, Malam El-Yakub Aliyu, finished listening to the plaintiff and the defence lawyers, and was about to close the session.
The court had heard the submissions of the plaintiff's counsel, Mr Dayyabu Ayuba, who objected to the bail application made by the defence counsel for one of the suspects, Ibrahim Marafa of Nasarawa quarters.
Ayuba argued that the case against Marafa was too serious to be granted bail, adding that even for his own safety, the court should refuse the application.
However, the defence lawyer, Mr Kamdi Musa, cited the 1999 Constitution as amended and the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) to buttress his prayers, adding that Musa would not jump bail as a family man.
Aliyu, however, refused the application, saying the sections cited by Musa were only applicable if there was no provision on the issue in the Shari'a law.
He also asked if the two other suspects, Usman Sabo and Hafiz Abubakar both of Bakin Kura quarters, were represented by counsel, but they said no.
A witness in the case, Dalhatu Gambo, 35, a carpenter at Bakin Kura quarters, told the court that residents of the area were informed that the duo were practising sodomy in a private house.
During cross examination by the presiding officer, Gambo said he only heard about their involvement in the act but did not actually catch them in the act.
He said, however, that he once saw both suspects in the house with one of them improperly dressed.
The mob started stoning the suspects while they were being returned to prison custody when the court adjourned sitting on the case.
However, the police were invited to control the situation.

EXCLUSIVE: A cure for ALL cancers is on the way as scientists make major breakthrough
MILLIONS of cancer sufferers have been given fresh hope of a cure after ground-breaking research. Scientists have made huge leaps in cancer research.
The breakthrough came in a 16-year study of the only animal immune to cancer.
In a world first, Professor Aaron Avivi and his team found that cells from the blind mole rat and its cousin the naked mole rat secrete a substance that destroys cancer cells in mammals – including humans.
Experts think harvesting this substance and making it safe to digest could wipe out a disease that kills eight million people each year worldwide. Last night Prof Avivi, of Haifa University in Israel was heading to London where he is due to present his findings to professionals.
His radical approach studied the two species of rat that both live mostly underground – which the team discovered had led to a dramatic evolution of their metabolism.
Blind mole rats outlive other rodents by at least 20 years with no outward signs of ageing. Researchers have never located a cancerous tumour on one of them.
The team tested the underground rodents and regular mice and rats with two potent carcinogens. Ordinary mice and rats developed tumours – none was found in the subterranean rats.
The study, published in the widely respected BMC Biology Journal, concluded: "Blind mole rats are resistant to spontaneous cancer but also to experimentally induced cancer.
"It shows the unique ability of the blind mole rat to inhibit growth and kill cancer cells, but not normal cells. It has evolved efficient anti-cancer mechanisms.
"Exploring the molecular mechanisms may hold the key for understanding the nature of resistance to cancer and identify new strategies for treating humans."
The study was described as "exciting" by Prof Penella Woll, of the University of Sheffield's department of oncology. She said: "Other researchers have taken a similar approach, studying sea creatures with intrinsic cancer resistance to develop the anti-cancer drug trabectedin – so we know that this can succeed."

Funsho Williams’s murder: Panic as defendant slumps in court
There was panic at the Lagos High Court in Igbosere, yesterday, as one of the defendants in the on-going trial of suspected killers of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, chieftain, Engr. Funsho Williams, slumped in court.
The presiding judge, Justice Ebenezer Adebajo, immediately stood down the trial for about 10 minutes to enable the defendant, Musa Maina, receive medical attention at the court premises.
Vanguard gathered that Maina was asthmatic and was supported into the court room by two prison warders, but slumped after 45 minutes into trial. And when Maina was resuscitated, he wept profusely.
Maina, alongside Bulama Kolo, David Cassidy, Tunani Sonani, Mustapha Kayode and Okponwasa Imariabie, were accused by Lagos State of conspiring to kill Williams on July 27, 2006, at 34A, Corporation Drive, Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi.
They were first arraigned on March 1, 2013, on a two count charge of conspiracy and murder, offences which contravened Sections 316 and 324 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2003.
At the resumed hearing, the defence counsel, Mr. Okezie Agbara, argued that the ruling of the magistrate tendered as an exhibit was not signed by the magistrate, and maintained that the document was not authentic since it was not signed by the author of the document (the magistrate).
He urged the court to disregard the authority cited by the prosecution, arguing that investigation can be carried at any time of the trial.
At the last adjourned date, a witness, Mr Ovie Oyokomino, told the court that some exhibits for the trial of the suspected killers of Williams have been damaged due to epileptic power supply.

Strike paralyses LASUTH, LUTH, others
Patients at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja and the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba deserted the hospitals as a result of the warning strike embarked upon by health workers in the country.
Our correspondent who monitored the strike in LASUTH and LUTH on Wednesday observed that it was only doctors that were in the clinics and the wards of the hospitals.
There were no patients at the medical records section, the eye and dental clinics, among others.
A doctor, who spoke on condition of anonymity at LASUTH, said though the doctors were working most patients abstained from coming to the hospital due to the health workers strike.
The general atmosphere at LASUTH and LUTH confirmed that the health workers complied with the strike.
However, skeletal services were being offered at the emergency units of both hospitals even though it was not as busy as it used to be.
Health workers under the aegis of the Joint Health Sector Unions on Tuesday had declared a three-day nationwide strike in all federal, state and local health institutions across the country.
The strike is to protest against the non-implementation of the collective bargain agreement and Memorandum of Understanding between JOHESU and the government and the non-implementation of the judgment of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria.
Their demands include the non-implementation of skipping Consolidated Medical Health Salary Structure, CONHESS from 9 to 10 and the payment of consultancy allowances and failure to promote deserving members from CONHESS 14 to 15.
