Women who sit for half the day have increased risk of a heart attack

Researchers have also warned that the chance of developing cancer increases by a fifth among women who spend a lot of time sitting down.

One of the biggest studies of its kind involving 93,000 post-menopausal Americans found that women who spent a lot of time sitting and resting died earlier than more active peers.

Females who were inactive for more than 11 hours daily were 12 per cent more likely to die prematurely from all causes compared with those sitting down for four hours or less.

They were at a 27 per cent higher risk of dying from coronary heart disease, the threat of cancer was 21 per cent higher, with a 13 per cent greater chance of cardiovascular disease.

Dr Rebecca Seguin, of Cornell University in New York, said: "The assumption has been if you are fit and physically active, that will protect you, even if you spend a huge amount of time sitting each day.

"In fact, in doing so you are far less protected than you realise."

Earlier this month it was reported British women are among the most likely to suffer bowel, breast and womb cancer because of their lack of exercise. The UK has the 10th highest rate of the diseases out of more than 180 countries.

The new study showed the association between sedentary time and mortality stayed even when mobility, chronic disease, demographic factors and overall fitness were factored in.

The researchers, whose findings are published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, said this means even habitual exercisers are at risk if they have high amounts of idle time.

Dr Seguin said too much time sitting in an office or watching TV makes it harder to regain physical strength and function.

From the age of 35, women begin to lose muscle mass – which accelerates with the menopause. Regular exercise, especially lifting weights and other muscle building exercises, helps counteract the decline.

But her research reveals more everyday movement on top of working out is also important.

Dr Seguin said: "Women need to find ways to remain active. If you are in an office, get up and move around frequently. If you are retired, find ways to move around.

"Get up between TV programmes, take breaks in computer and reading time and be conscious of interrupting prolonged sedentary time."

JUNGLE JUSTICE: Residents Stone Suspected Robbers To Death In Lagos (PHOTO)

Two unidentified persons were stoned to death in the Sabo, Yaba area of Lagos State after being apprehended by youths for allegedly robbing a resident of his phones.

Our correspondent, who visited McNeil Road, where the incident occurred, learnt that the alleged robbers attacked a 79-year-old man, Pa Emmanuel Thomas, in his apartment around 4am on Saturday.

The elderly man told PUNCH Metro that the robbers beat up his guest and demanded that he gave them all his money.

He said, "I was in my room and a guest was in my sitting room. But because there was no electricity, I opened the main doors for cross ventilation. A few minutes later, two young guys barged into the house.

"One of them slapped my female guest who was in the sitting room and snatched her phone and charger, the other guy told me to give him all my money and I told him all I had was N30 which was kept inside my Bible. They also snatched my telephone and wristwatch."

It was learnt that prior to the robbery, youths in the area had been suspicious of the alleged robbers, wondering what the strange men wanted on their street at that odd hour.

One of the youths, who craved anonymity, said, "Around 3.30am, I was returning from a carnival when I noticed two strange faces on Little Road. When the guys saw me, they pretended to be fixing an abandoned bus and were talking as if they were a bus driver and his conductor waiting for daybreak.

"When I walked past, they continued to roam the street, so I informed one of my friends and together, we tailed them. Suddenly, they entered Pa Thomas's house and then I heard the elderly man screamed for help.

"We quickly surrounded the house and dared the robbers to come out. When they saw that they were trapped, one of them jumped the fence into the next compound which is on Little Road. I was able to arrest one, while the other one escaped."

PUNCH Metro learnt that the arrested robber was beaten up to a pulp.

It was also learnt that an hour later, the second robber, who hid inside another compound, was exposed by a resident and was also handed over to the irate youths.

The youths were said to have beaten up the two robbers mercilessly.

When our correspondent asked the residents why they did not involve the police, one of them said, "On that day, there was a serious crisis at a neighbouring community, Iwaya, and most of the policemen from Sabo Division had diverted all their attention to the area.

"Also, these robbers usually hang around a brothel located on a neighbouring street. If we hand them over to the police, they will be released and come back to terrorise us."

It was learnt that the alleged robbers, who were still alive, were stripped Unclad and dumped on the Sabo end of the Herbert Macaulay Way, about 200 metres from the Sabo Police Division.

It was, however, learnt that passers-by pelted the alleged robbers with stones until they died.

A resident of McNeil, Sola, said, "It was not our intention to kill the robbers, we only beat them up and dumped them by the road side. However, when passers-by learnt of what they had done, many of them picked up rocks and stoned them to death."

It was learnt that by the time policemen arrived around 9am, the alleged robbers were already dead.

Attempts to contact the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, were not sucessful as calls made to her telephone rang out, while a text message sent to the phone was also not replied as of the time of going to the press.

D’Banj Gets Verified On Facebook

Popular Nigerian singer, D'Banj has been verified on the famous social media website, Facebook.

With the development, the self-acclaimed 'Kokomaster' becomes the first Nigerian celebrity and the second Nigerian to have his account with the platform confirmed. Before now, President Goodluck Jonathan was the only Nigerian verified on Facebook.

His account with Facebook now carries a 'blue tick' sign to show the authentic account of the singer and distinguish it from parody accounts of D'Banj.

Unlike twitter, which has many Nigerian public figures verified on its platform, getting verified is more difficult.

The anti-graft agency said Ezechukwu, a graduate of the Lagos State University, allegedly cloned the Facebook accounts of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; wife of Lagos State Governor, Abimbola Fashola; wife of the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Aisha Bala Muhammed; and the Director of the Abuja Geographical Information Systems, Jamilah Tangaza.

Proposal gone wrong! Man nearly drowns girlfriend by proposing under water (photos)

Anthony Taylor thought that proposing to his girlfriend Stephanie Walker underwater during a scuba dive would be an unforgettable romantic gesture – but it almost had a tragic ending when she was so surprised she nearly drowned.

Mr Taylor, 27, and Miss Walker, 26, from Wolverhampton, were on holiday in the Turkish resort of Marmaris in August last year when he decided to propose. He approached scuba diving instructors, who helped him make a laminated card with the words 'Will you marry me?' written on it.
When they were 40ft below the surface of the water, Mr Taylor showed the card to Miss Walker – making her gasp out of surprise and filling her mask with water.
'I was originally going to propose to Stephanie over dinner, or on the beach,' he said. 'But then I got a bit creative.
'I had bought the ring before we set off on holiday. And when I went to book the scuba diving trip, it got me thinking. I drew up the signs with the instructors beforehand.

Luckily, instructors were on hand to help the shocked woman recover, and when she had regained her composure she accepted the proposal.

After three years on the blacklist, China lifts gag on Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga — the flamboyant and provocative New York-based pop singer — has been removed from a Chinese government blacklist, allowing her chart-topping new album "ARTPOP" to go on sale legally in China.

But Chinese censors have placed conditions on the album art, inflating a large ball between her legs to cover more of the naked singer's body and adding a pair of black tights to the singer's bare legs.

Chinese officials also changed one song title, transforming "Sexxx Dreams" to "X Dreams."

But in China, the pop diva's songs had been on a blacklist since 2011, when the Culture Ministry deemed her work to be "creating confusion in the order of the online music market, and damaging the nation's cultural security."

Lady Gaga last week responded with enthusiasm to the lifting of the ban on her Twitter feed.

"China has been given the go ahead singer I'm so excited!!!! The Chinese Government approved 'ARTPOP' to be released in China with all 15 songs! Next I hope I can come to perform!," she said on her Twitter account.

Roman Abramovich’s Girlfriend Get Blasted by Fans for Sitting On top Black Woman

Russian billionaire and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich's partner Dasha Zhukova, sparked an internet controversy yesterday which was Martin Luther King Day after a picture of her sitting on a half-naked black woman was published online.

Dasha Zhukova, 32, who has two children with the Chelsea owner, sat on the chair made to resemble a half-naked black woman during a fashion shoot for her new online magazine Garage.

Unfortunately, when the picture was published online, all hell was let loose with most people describing the image as jarring, upsetting and very offensive and very troubling considering the long history of White women partaking in the dismissal and domination of Black women.
The crude piece of 'art' seems to be inspired by a collection by artist Allen Jones who used White
mannequins styled as strippers as furniture in 1969.

Dasha and her friend who uploaded the picture, Miroslava Duma were immediately bombarded with criticism and very negative comments.
They have since issued apologies and deleted the picture from Instagram.
