Two entertainment channels were launched on November 5 on cable TV,
DSTV. Entertainment channel, Hip TV –channel 324, finally made its
debut, while Spice TV- channel 192, a sister station to SoundCity,
also went live.
While HipTv parades itself as a break from the norm with its contents
like Live It up, Star Struck, Next Rated, and exclusive interviews,
Spice TV is described as a fashion and beauty channel dedicated to
exploring African fashion and culture on the continent, showcasing the
latest trends, major fashion shows, designer events and highlights of
fashion industry professionals with contents like Spice Runway, Diary
of a Muse, Spice Focus and Fashion 360.
MultiChoice Africa's CEO, Nico Meyer, expressed confidence that the
launch of the two stations is a welcome development. He stated that it
will provide of DSTV with an increased number of entertainment
channels.
"We are pleased to be launching two new home grown channels – Spice TV
and Hip TV on DSTV and we are certain that the launch of these two
channels will provide subscribers with a greater variety of
entertainment made in Africa, for Africa," he said.
In an earlier interview with PREMIUM TIMES, Ayo Animashaun, CEO of
HipTv, gave an insight to what to expect from his new adventure while
also pointing out that the cable station will be viewed across major
African countries.
"We are doing our own thing. We say we are a break from the norm, so
we are setting our own standards. People have done things before us
that we are proud of, but we are doing our thing our way and I would
like us to keep it at that," he said.
"We are already in Ghana, U.K., Gabon, U.S., Kenya, Burundi, Angola,
Tanzania and so many parts of the Africa continent. So the beauty of
it is that when a citizen of Gabon is going good music and gets on our
platform, he will be assured that the whole of Africa gets to consume
his music".

Enugu Government House Hostage: I Was Fully Briefed By Mrs Clara Chime, Asserts Femi Falana
Human rights advocate Femi Falana has repudiated the claim by the
governor of Enugu State, Mr. Sullivan Chime, that he did not receive a
brief from his wife to represent her to secure her release from the
illegal detention imposed by her husband, the governor.
"I wish to say, without any fear of contradiction, that I have her
instructions in writing to challenge her illegal detention at the
Government House, Enugu," he declared in a statement on Wednesday.
"Through the assistance of some of the security personnel in the
Government House she has since spoken to me on phone to confirm her
instructions. Indeed, Mrs Chime's mother and her personal physician
have also been in touch with me urging me to take all appropriate
measures to secure her freedom from Governor Chime's illegal
confinement."
Beyond that, Mr. Falana pointed out that contrary to the governor's
diversionary statement, he does not need the instructions of citizens
who are illegally detained to demand for their release.
"Without any instructions I am duty bound to file cases in court to
secure the enforcement of the fundamental rights of detainees to
personal liberty. For the avoidance of doubt, the doctrine of locus
standi in the area of human rights has been abolished by the
Fundamental Rights (Enforcement Procedure) Rules 2009 which came into
force on December 1, 2009," he said.
Mr. Falana noted that at the press conference Governor Chime succeeded
in confirming the allegation that he has held his wife in illegal
custody but attempted to justify the illegality by alleging that his
wife has "a medical challenge".
Said the statement: "When Governor Chime was recently medically
challenged he was not subjected to solitary confinement in the
Government House but flown abroad for adequate medical treatment," the
lawyer said. "But Mr Chime has conspired with his private physicians
to sentence his wife to unwarranted mental torture and psychological
trauma in a room in the Government House for the past four months. If
Mr. Chime's claim is correct that the wife is non compos mentis, when
was the Enugu Government House converted to a psychiatric hospital?
"Having confirmed the allegation that he has willfully infringed the
fundamental rights of his wife to personal liberty, dignity of the
person and freedom of movement Governor Chime should release his wife
from illegal custody [and] be warned not to divert attention from the
brutal abuse of the rights of his wife. If he and his doctors are
convinced that she is medically challenged they should send her to a
hospital for quick recovery!"
Mr. Falana thanked the Director-General of the State Security Service
who, he said, has directed the security service personnel attached to
the Government House to desist from teaming up with the Governor to
hold his wife hostage.

MEET ISAAC BROWN, THE BOY WHO FEELS NO PAIN
saac Brown is a 5-year-old boy from Iowa who suffers from a rare
genetic condition which makes him immune to pain, but not to the
effects of his frequent injuries. Painful falls, deep cuts and other
agonizing injuries that normally make children scream at the top of
their lungs and cry out for their parents, don't determine any kind of
reaction from little Isaac. Even after he broke his pelvis by falling
from playground equipment, he calmly acknowledged that something was
wrong, but he didn't feel pain.
Isaac was born with a conprivate part insensitivity to pain (CIP) and,
according to his parents, the first years of his life years were
especially hard as the boy "would just drop to the ground and smack
his face on the table. He thought the fall was fun." Unaware of the
damage he was doing to his body, he also put his hands on a working
oven burner and one time cut himself with sharp pieces from a mug he
had broken. His parents sought medical help but were disappointed to
find that his condition was untreatable.
The only advice medics were able to give the couple was to teach Isaac
to recognize pain. He now knows that bleeding is bad but he is still
unable to understand that there are different levels of pain which
vary in intensity. While he understands that his father accidentally
stepping on him is painful, he doesn't recognize that a cat brushing
against him, while it might be unpleasant to some, should not hurt.
Unfortunately, Isaac's response in both of these situations is the
same "Ow" that his parents thought him to say.
However, when he broke his pelvic bone at the playground, the boy
became aware that something was wrong, but wasn't quite sure what. "He
thought his ankle hurt," his mother says. Because of this, she
believes that "He does feel [something], but the pain has to be 20 to
30 times greater to what we would feel." Apart from his inability to
feel pain, Isaac also suffers from Anhidrosis – a rare condition that
affects fewer than 100 people in the United States, which renders him
unable to control his temperature or feel hot or cold. In the summer,
when the temperatures are sky-high, he is forced to stay indoors or
wear a cooling vest to help him lower his body's temperature.
Because CIP is so rare, medics don't know what causes it or what to
advise parents with children who suffer from it. In an attempt to
learn how to take better care of their son, Mr and Mrs Brown have also
sought help online and found "The Gift of Pain", a Facebook group
created by desperate parents looking to give their kids the chance to
a normal life. As members of this group, the parents of Ashlyn Blocker
– a 13-year-old girl with the same disorder who has been featured in
numerous news pieces when she was a bit younger, have set up a
gathering called "Camp Painless but Hopeful." Any family burdened with
CIP can attend and learn more about the condition as well as ways of
preventing their kids from unknowingly hurting themselves. Although
Isaac has been kept quite safe by his parents without resorting to
extreme measures, "other kids have had all their teeth removed because
they would self-mutilate, bite their tongues, chew their
fingers off," Mr Brown says.
