Dangote to complete cement plants in five African countries this year

THE Dangote Group has disclosed plans to complete five cement plans across five African countries before the end this year.

The plants, which are at various stages of construction, according to the Group President and Chief Executive, Aliko Dangote, would add about 13.5 million metric tonnes (mmt) of cement yearly to the existing capacity, when completed.

The ongoing projects are in Zambia, 1.5mmtpa; Tanzania, 1.5mmtpa; South-Africa 3mmtpa; Republic of Congo, 1.5mmtpa; and Gabon 1.5mmtpa.

Back home, Dangote Cement is already working on additional third and fourth production lines to the existing six mmtpa in Ibese, Ogun state to bring the total capacity to 12mmtpa and another 3mmtpa line currently being added to the Obajana cement plant in Kogi state.

Addressing a group of African businessmen in his office at the weekend, Dangote said the Group's core business focus was to provide local, value-added products and services that meet the basic needs of the populace through construction and operation of large scale manufacturing facilities across Africa.

According to him, the group is focused on building local manufacturing to generate employment, prevent capital flight and provide locally produced goods for the people.

He disclosed that presently, Obajana is the largest cement plant in sub-saharan Africa with a current capacity of 10.25mmtpa and an additional 3mmpa planned before the end of this year.

Dangote stated that the group would continue to lead other investors to ensure Nigeria becomes an industrial giant nation that is self-sufficient in production rather than being a leader in importations.

Stressing on the need for investments in the real sector, he said: "This indeed, shows that Africa is gradually taking its destiny in its own hands rather than wait for investors from outside Africa. Investment in the real sector of the economy is the only way that our continent can achieve the much desired accelerated growth and development that we have yearned for.

"The developmental challenges of Africa are quite tremendous. According to a report by the McKinsey Global Institute issued in June 2010, Africa requires at least $46 billion in spending annually to meet infrastructural needs. It is obvious that African governments alone cannot hope to meet this demand due to the various competing needs in other aspects of the economy.

"We are motivated to create an African success story because we believe that entrepreneurship, especially our own home-grown African entrepreneurship, holds the key to the future economic growth of the continent. The fact that Africa offers one of the highest returns on investment (ROI) in the world is an additional incentive for any discerning investor, who can take calculated risks," he added.

He assured that with his Group's massive investments in the cement production, not only will Nigerians enjoy reduced price stability, but that the nation will become exporter of the commodity to other countries.

The Group President maintained that continuous investments in Nigeria and the rest of Africa was borne out of the fact that the country was a fertile ground for investment and that no one outside Africa would be genuinely determine to develop Africa except African themselves.

He explained the efforts put into the multi million dollars plants as worthy when perceived from the standpoint of the fact that there is the need for job and wealth creation in the country adding that these two critical necessities could only be achieved through manufacturing.

Dangote pledged the Company's unwavering commitment to jobs and wealth creation for the citizenry pointing out that agriculture holds the ace and that informed the decision by the Group to venture into fertilizer production so as to help the farmers.

A 21-year-old man, Mansur Tanko, on Friday, burnt himself to death in Jalingo, after a disagreement with his father, Tanko Mijinyawa, over marriage.

The Taraba Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Joseph Kwaji, confirmed the incident and said the Jalingo Division of the police had commenced investigation into the matter.

Tanko, according to an eyewitness, Alhaji Jibrin Bala, set himself ablaze because his family refused to approve his wedding with a girl, Blessing.

The eyewitness told sympathisers that Tanko introduced Blessing to his father as his proposed wife, but the father kicked against the union, describing it as a bad choice.

Bala said efforts by the father to convince his son to look for another girl failed, as he insisted that he could not survive without Blessing.

The eyewitness added that Tanko suddenly left his father and went to a corner in the compound, where he poured petrol on his body and set himself ablaze.

"When we suddenly saw fire, everybody ran toward the corner of the compound, only to see Tanko burning.

"The father and other people in the compound tried to rescue Tanko from the fire, but failed as the flame was much and we could not move near," he said.

Meanwhile, he said, Tanko's father is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo, for injuries sustained while trying to rescue the son from the fire.

Jonathan phones Obasanjo, begs him to reconsider decision…

President Goodluck Jonathan has telephoned former President Olusegun Obasanjo to deny responsibility for promoting a controversial member of his Peoples Democratic Party, Buruji Kashamu, as an influential party leader in the south-west geo-political zone, a development that has infuriated Mr. Obasanjo, sources close to the former president said Saturday.

Mr. Obasanjo was travelling to Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, at the time of the conversation with Mr. Jonathan, those familiar with the matter said.

Usually reliable presidency sources said Mr. Jonathan hurriedly called Mr. Obasanjo on Thursday shortly after he received the former president's latest letter informing him and the PDP National Chairman, Bamanga Tukur, that he was suspending participation in party activities for as long as the ruling party continued to treat Mr. Kashamu, believed to be a fugitive, with reverence.

Our sources said during the telephone exchanges, Mr. Jonathan appealed to Mr. Obasanjo to reconsider his decision to suspend himself from the party, saying he would personally prevail on Mr. Tukur to stop fraternizing with Mr. Kashamu and imposing him on the South-West PDP as a rallying point.

The president, according to our sources, told Mr. Obasanjo that he had never met Mr. Kashamu and had never instructed anyone to accord the controversial Ogun politician a special or preferential treatment in the party.

"Baba, believe me, I don't know Kashamu," our sources quoted Mr. Jonathan as saying. "I think it is the chairman (Tukur) that knows him. Personally, I have nothing with him. But I will ask chairman.

"Kindly consider your decision again. The PDP belongs to us all and we need to correct whatever is wrong together."

SPORT| Super Eagles' wings clipped

Mali's Eagles stunned their Nigerian counterparts, Super Eagles 2-1 at the African Nations Championship (Chan) in South Africa which kicked off on Saturday at the Cape Town Stadium.

Dangerman, Abduloulaye Sissoko powered a clinical shot which brushed off Super Eagles defender, Azubuike Egwuekwe to beat displaced goalkeeper, Chigozie Agbim for the opening goal in the 18th minute.

The Malians, who were clearly dominant in the first half, almost doubled the lead two minutes but Lassana Diarra failed to connect the ball into an open net.

The Nigerians struggled to come into the game but found rugged and hard tackling Malians too tough to handle.

While Agbim was called out severally to keep out Mali's dangerous incursions his counterpart, Soumaila Diakita was never troubled as the West Africans headed into the half time break with their precious lone goal lead.

Mali stepped up the pressure into the Nigerian vital area at the resumption of play and was rewarded as Adama Traore's grounder squeezed through underneath of Agbim and into the net for Mali's second goal in the 50th minute.

Nigeria head coach, Stephen Keshi response to Malian onslaughts was two quick substitutions in the 50th and 53rd minutes as he pulled out the duo of Abubakar Ali and Ikenna Hilary for Gbolahan Salami and Abdullahi Shehu.

Salami's introduction paid off almost immediately as his powerful header proved too strong for Malian goalkeeper to hand Nigeria a goal in the 55th minute.

Salami's goal brought urgency in the Nigerian front men for the equaliser but the Malians were unyielding as Agbim was further subjected to some anxious moment by Sissoko and Diarra.

The 3SC goal poacher continued to threaten the Malians effortlessly but it was Diarra who turned out to be the tormentor-in-chief of the Nigerian side.

Nigeria will have to fight themselves back into the championship on Wednesday when the confront Mozambique at the Cape Town Stadium while hosts and group leaders, South Africa will try to fence off the challenge from Mali.

Anything short of victory against Mozambique will signal the end of the road for Nigeria in the biennial football showpiece in their debut as the last group game against hosts, South Africa will be inconsequential.

SPORT| Manchester City In The Fray To Sign Another Nigeria U-17 Star

Manchester City are poised to secure a deal for Nigeria another under-17 star Musa Yahaya.

Yahaya scored four times in seven matches at the U-17 World Cup held in the United Arab Emirates, with Nigeria beating Mexico 3-0 in the final to win the tournament.

Dubbed the 'Nigerian Neymar', Yahaya had been tracked by Tottenham, as well as teams in Portugal and Spain, but City appear to have won the race for the 16-year-old and are in deep discussions with the player's agent, Babawo Mohammed.

The attacking midfielder, who plays at the Mutunchi Academy in his homeland, would become the third member of the African nation's junior team to join City and is keen to link up with his international team-mates at the Etihad Stadium.

Yahaya, who describes Andres Iniesta as his footballing hero and has admitted he wants to play for Real Madrid, has remained coy over his immediate future in recent months.

"I am not going to talk on that one [where he wants to move], I have a manager in Babawo Mohammed. I have left that for him to handle. He knows me and knows what is good for me," he told MTNFootball in November.

Striker Kelechi Iheanacho, who won the Golden Ball at the U-17 World Cup after picking up six goals and seven assists, signed a pre-contract agreement with Manuel Pellegrini's side on Friday and will join when he turns 18 in October.

Chidi Nwakali, meanwhile, is also on the verge of signing for the club after arriving for talks last week, with City opening their state-of-the-art Etihad Campus training facility in August.

POLITICS| Open letters: Don’t leave PDP, Tukur begs Obasanjo

ABUJA – NATIONAL chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, Saturday, pleaded with former President Olusegun Obasanjo not to leave the party.
Obasanjo had in a one-page letter, dated 7 January, 2014 to Tukur, said he would temporarily cease to be a member of the party by withdrawing from its activities at the local, state and federal levels over the allegation that  Chief Buruji Kashamu, the Chairman of the Organisation and Mobilisation Committee of the party in the  South West,  is a wanted man in the United States.
Tukur's letter:
"It is an honour that you deemed it fit and proper to intimate me with an issue important to your mind and our party in the South-west zone. It is my wish and prayer that such cordial and positive relationship will continue between your good self; former President and former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of our great party on one hand, and my humble self, the National Chairman of our party on the other hand.
"Buruji Kasamu came to limelight in politics as a result of the role he played in the politics of Ogun state where both of you come from. He later became a rallying point in the South-west following the Courts' Orders in the series of cases brought about as a result of disagreements among leaders of the party in the South-west, and Ogun State in particular.
"In my opinion, Buruji became a rallying point because of the absence of a zonal executive in the South-west. This vacuum in the South-west has made him the person to whom many members in all the chapters of the party in the zone approach for one form of assistance or the order.
"We came in when we were threatened with contempt of court charges for not obeying the court's order to dissolve the South-west zonal executive and remove some officers of the party.
"We complied with the court's orders because of our belief in the rule of law and to avoid consequences of disobeying such orders."
